Maffett, H.M. - Root Cellar
Arched cellar built into embankment located in a patch of forest on the northern edge of Kanza Prairie. It comes off of the back of remnants of small stone house. It has been covered with concrete or plaster at some point in its history. The history of this house seems to have been rather short lived. It only shows up on the 1881 plat map. By 1902 it had been swallowed up by a major cattle operation. When this cave was photographed there was actually a nesting vulture inside with a clutch of two eggs on the bare ground near the front entrance. The cave walks out to the south into the house and measures 14'(L)8'(W)x7'(H).
