Winkler, Conrad - Root Cellar
Spring Creek Township
This arched cellar is built to the west of remnants of a stone house into slight slope somewhat raised hump. It walks out onto flat ground. The facade is very grand for a relatively small interior space. The whole structure is made of very large dry stacked stones. A native of the area says the compound of structures was built by an eccentric loner who built everything himself. Apparently no one ever lived on property after he died. The site is very hard to access being located at least 1/3 of a mile off of any road over cropland, woods, a stream and pasture. The compound includes a number of stone structures other than the cave. The cellar opens to the east and measures 9'(L)7'(W)x6.5'(H).
