Smith, Clara - Root Cellar

Manhattan Township

Riley County

This arched cellar is built into hillside in the middle of what is now an Audobon area west of Stagg Hill Rd. in Manhattan, KS. It was part of the farmstead of an early woman's liberation activist named Clara Smith. At the time she lived here there was few trees on the site. They grew peony's flowers as well as took care of horses and raised food enough to be self sufficient. The root cellar played an important roll in this. Clara's decedents took over the farm after her passing. The cave opens to the northeast and is approximately 14'(L) x 6'(W) x 7'(H).
